Geoff Ice, harmonica
When Geoff was 8 years old he found an old "Echo Harp" that his dad had in a dresser drawer. He would frequently sneak this out and play it when no one was home until the reeds became so out of tune that he got caught and his dad gave it to him. When he was 10, he was given his first diatonic harmonica as a present by his Aunt and Uncle for serving in their wedding. With that harp he learned to play "bad-harmonica" folk music by listening to Bob Dylan, Donavon and the like.
Soon however he discovered the Blues and began listening to artist like Sonny Boy Williamson, Jimmie Reed, Paul Butterfield, John Mayall, and Little Walter. He went to college in San Antonio where he played quite often with numerous singer-song-writers and various bands. During this time he also recorded sound-tracks on several locally produced movies. After graduation he got a job with Nashville recording artist Baily Anderson. His band "The Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dogs" performed regularly at various honky-tonks around San Antonio and Geoff was making almost $25 a week!!
After a while he decided that he was probably going to need to get a "real" job so he left SA for Houston and began working in the Texas and Louisiana oil fields. In between jobs he would head to Houston or Austin where he would frequently sit-in with various bands and singer-song-writers. He and his wife moved back home to Fort Worth in 1981 and for about 15 years he quit playing.
In 1996 he got a job in Dallas and began commuting over 100 miles a day. Quite a few harmonica players practice when they drive and Geoff is no exception. After a few months of practicing 1-2 hours, 5 days a week he was ready and so he began playing professionally again. He now plays regularly with several bands in the area including Ebenezer and is famous for being the "crazy harmonica-playing driver of Inter-State 30."
